Mentelle Neighborhood Association

The Mentelle Neighborhood Association’s board of directors will have its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday (April 20) at the Children’s Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass, 162 N. Ashland Ave. (Meeting room entrance is around back of the main building.) Any MNA member is welcome to attend.

Join your neighbors at 10 a.m. Saturday (April 23) for a couple of hours of Mentelle Median cleanup and garden work to get our official city park ready for spring. We want to get the flower beds in shape before the weeds start growing too much. We hope to see you there! (Who knows; you may even find some leftover Easter candy.)

It was great to see so many neighbors at our annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday! We were fortunate to enjoy a beautiful, sunny spring morning – perfect for catching up with friends. And thanks to the generosity of numerous Mentelle neighborhood residents, we received 800 eggs this year and expanded the hunt to three medians. A special thank you to Shelby Reynolds and Hannah Ruehl for helping to make the event a success as well as the Mentelle Park residents who cleaned up the median for us ahead of time. We look forward to seeing all Mentelle Neighborhood residents and their families tomorrow, Saturday, at 10 a.m. for our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Thanks to the generosity of our neighbors, we have more than 650 eggs this year!

We will gather in between the two medians closest to Cramer Avenue. Complimentary Nate’s Coffee and Spalding’s Bakery donuts will be available. We will also have temporary tattoos for anyone who would like to partake. Then, kids aged 5-10 will hunt on the first median (closest to Cramer) and those younger than 5 will hunt on the second median.

We do see a forecast for some rain this evening and early tomorrow morning, so expect that the grass will be wet. But hopefully the weather will be clear in time for the event.

If you live on Mentelle Park, please take a few minutes today to pick up sticks and other debris from the median in front of your home so no little ones get hurt. We appreciate your help!

The Warehouse Block Business Association (WBBA) Advisory Board will meet this Thursday, April 14, at 4:30 p.m. at Mirror Twin Brewing. In addition, the WBBA is excited to offer the first of several candidate forums to be held inside the Warehouse Block leading up to the Primary election on May 17.

The first forum will be held at Mirror Twin Brewing on Monday, April 18, from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. This forum will feature Council-at-Large hopeful, Mr. Dan Wu. Dan was born in China, immigrating to America as a child. He landed in Lexington just in time to attend Henry Clay High School and the University of Kentucky. Although Dan has followed several unique career paths, his most notable came as a contestant on Fox’s Master Chef in 2014. That exposure prompted him to delve deeper into his passion for cooking, dubbing himself a “Culinary Evangelist,” with the successful launch of a pop-up food stand and then later opening Atomic Ramen at the Summit.

Dan’s passion for activism can be seen across Lexington with campaigns he originated including “I am a Kentuckian,” and “Immigrants and Refugees Belong Here.” WBBA is proud to co-host the meet-and-greet event that will take place in a casual format where you can engage with the candidate directly. In the meantime, please check out his website, along with his social media pages.

Our annual Easter Egg Hunt is right around the corner! If you wish to donate plastic eggs — preferably filled with a piece of wrapped candy — for the Mentelle Easter Egg Hunt on April 16, please bring them to the porch of 29 Mentelle Park. Donations will be accepted this weekend and all next week, but no later than Friday, April 15.  We would love to have at least 400 eggs to make this a fun and memorable event for our neighborhood’s children.

The hunt will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16, on the Mentelle Park medians near Cramer Avenue. There will be two hunts — one for little kids through age 4 and one for bigger kids between ages 5-10.  Bigger kids will hunt on the median closest to Cramer and the little ones will hunt on the second median.

No small children in your household? No problem! We hope that all Mentelle Neighborhood residents will come out to socialize with your neighbors and celebrate the beginning of spring. Complimentary coffee will be available courtesy of Nate’s Coffee as well as delicious donuts from Spalding’s Bakery. We will also have temporary tattoos for both the kids and those just young at heart.

We hope to see all Mentelle Neighborhood residents there!

A citywide conversation April 10-16 will provide public input into Lexington’s next 20-year growth plan and other priorities for our city and neighborhood.

The Mentelle Neighborhood Association will host an On The Table gathering at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the Children’s Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass, 162 North Ashland Ave. The meeting room is at the back of the building, where we held our last MNA annual meeting.

If there’s enough interest, we can schedule additional On The Table sessions, including via Zoom or, weather permitting, in the median.

The annual Mentelle Neighborhood Easter Egg Hunt will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16, the day before Easter.  Kim Naujokas will send out details about the event and how you can donate filled plastic eggs for our neighborhood children to find that morning.

To get ready for the egg hunt, the Mentelle Median Committee leaders have planned two cleanup days for our  neighborhood’s public park. These will be mainly to clean up sticks and other tree debris and get the flower beds ready for summer. The cleanup sessions will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, and at 2 p.m. Friday, April 15. Everyone’s help is appreciated.

One more suggestion: Add some bending and stretching exercises to your daily walk around the neighborhood. Take along a plastic bag and pick up trash that has accumulated over the winter.
