More Warehouse Block Party details; sculpture reveal Friday (not Saturday)

From Chad Walker at Warehouse Block:

On Friday, July 26 at 10 a.m., the Warehouse Block Business Association, along with the LFUCG Corridors Commission, will host an unveiling ceremony for an art project known as the “Cubes.”  They are three large art pieces, ranging in size from six feet to eight feet in height, complete with LED alternating lighting, which will mark the entry to the Warehouse Block neighborhood along National Avenue.

The ceremony will take place at a new walking path behind Locals’ Craft Food & Drink.  The designer of the project, Ryan Hargrove of the UK Department of Landscape Architecture, who also designed the Southland Drive entry sign, will be on hand to explain the concept behind the design.  Also in attendance will be several Urban County Council members, members from the Corridors Commission and business owners from the Warehouse Block.  Locals’ will host a reception following the unveiling with  a complimentary early lunch for all attendees.

The Block Party will begin at noon and end at 10 p.m. Saturday, July 27.  National Avenue will be closed at North Ashland Avenue and Walton Avenue.  The parking lot at 740 National Avenue will still be functional.  Multiple food trucks, businesses and local artists will line the streets for the event.  Three bands will be in attendance at the Mirror Twin Stage: Type Blue (rock and roll cover band); Hi 5 (classics); and StarDevils (rock-a-billy.)  Music will begin around 4:30 p.m.  The event is free and family-friendly.

Mentelle Median cleanup this week

The Mentelle Median Committee has scheduled morning work sessions Friday and Saturday (May 17-18)  beginning at 9 a.m., weather permitting, to get our neighborhood park in shape for spring and summer. All neighborhood residents are invited to come and help. For more information, contact Jill DeBolt.

New monthly meetup for kids, parents

Some neighbors would like to start a monthly meet up for kids and parents in the neighborhood. Join us for our first Second Saturday meetup on May 11 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.  The Children’s Advocacy Center, 162 N. Ashland Ave., has kindly offered us the use of its playground for these events. The playground is directly behind the main entrance and building, to the left of the center. We’ll be inside the wooden fence.  Bring toys or games to share, or just come to play. For more information, or if you have any questions, email Emily Chamorro.

Mentelle Median work days planned

Want to be on Home & Garden Tour?

The Mentelle Neighborhood Association is planning a second Home & Garden Tour fundraiser for Sunday, Sept. 15, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

If you are within the neighborhood boundaries and have any interest in having your home and/or garden on the tour, please contact Shelby Reynolds at reybart88@yahoo.com no later than May 31. We would like to have six-to-eight properties for the tour. We also want a wide variety of homes and gardens — large to small, simple to elaborate — showing the diversity of our neighborhood.

The neighborhood’s first tour, in September 2014, was very successful. It attracted about 400 attendees and raised more than $3,000 for neighborhood activities and projects.

Thanks for a great Easter egg hunt!

Thanks to everyone to organized and came out for this morning’s annual Mentelle neighborhood Easter egg hunt and plant swap. Despite the damp, chilly weather, everyone seemed to have a great time. Special thanks to our  neighborhood businesses — Nate’s Coffee, Epping’s Bakery and Spalding’s Bakery — for refreshments.  (Click on any photo to see slide show.)

The Mentelle Egg Hunt is on!

It’s cold and wet, but our weather apps are predicting no more active rain this morning. So, the Egg Hunt and Plant Swap will begin at 10 a.m. if you, your children and plants want to brave the weather.  Dress warmly, and rain boots would be a good idea. (The city hasn’t mowed the median yet, so the grass is a bit tall.)  Hope to see you soon!

Ashland school Gallery Hop today!

Mentelle neighborhood residents are encouraged to attend Ashland Elementary School’s Gallery Hop late this afternoon in the Warehouse Block, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Start by coming to Varsity Print, 728 National Ave., at 4:30 to pick up a brochure with a map of student art exhibit locations and a schedule of musical and talent performances. Rolling Oven Pizza is offering pepperoni and cheese slices for $5, and there will be a live auction at 6 p.m. at Mirror Twin Brewing.

See the attached flyer for more details. Come out this afternoon and support our neighborhood school and businesses!
